Why Chess

A paint job is 90% prep — and 100% our standard.

Anyone can roll a wall. We obsess over the steps you don't see — and that's the difference you'll feel for the next decade.

We sand, mask, fill, caulk, prime and only then begin to paint. Drop cloths over hardwood. Hardware removed and labeled. Brush lines feathered into rolled fields. Edges cut by hand, not tape alone.

It's slower. It's why our work still looks great five winters into a Colorado weather cycle.

Paint We Recommend

The paint matters almost as much as the prep.

We've painted in every kind of Colorado weather — Cheyenne Mountain UV, Black Forest snow, Manitou wind. These are the products that hold up. Default to these unless you ask us otherwise.

i.

Sherwin-Williams Emerald

Our default interior workhorse. Self-leveling, exceptional washability, low-VOC. Slightly more expensive than ProClassic — worth every penny when you've got young kids or pets. Available in matte through gloss.

ii.

Benjamin Moore Aura

The premium choice when color depth matters. Ben Moore's Color Lock technology means saturated jewel tones and rich neutrals that don't fade or shift. Best for accent walls, primary suites, and statement rooms.

iii.

Sherwin-Williams Duration / Emerald Exterior

Built for Colorado weather. UV-stable, mildew-resistant, flexes with thermal expansion. We pair it with the matching primer for a system warranty that covers adhesion. 5-year workmanship warranty on exteriors painted with this system.

Custom brand preferences welcome — Dunn-Edwards, Farrow & Ball, Romabio, Cabot stains — we'll work with what you specify and tell you honestly how it'll perform.

The Prep Checklist

Eighteen things we do before opening a can.

Most paint failures aren't about the paint — they're about what didn't happen before the paint went on. Here is our standard prep checklist, written into every contract.

01

Hardware Removed

Switch plates, outlet covers, door hardware, and curtain rods come off — never get painted around.

02

Floors Protected

Canvas drop cloths over floors, plastic on furniture, tape on baseboards where needed.

03

Surface Cleaned

Walls washed where greasy or sooty (kitchens, near woodstoves), TSP for high-adhesion zones.

04

Holes & Cracks Filled

All nail holes, anchor holes, hairline cracks filled with proper compound — not just toothpaste-style spot patch.

05

Sanded Smooth

Patches sanded flush, glossy trim scuffed for adhesion, drywall feathered where new meets old.

06

Caulked Tight

Trim-to-wall, crown-to-ceiling, corner seams all caulked with paintable elastomeric — never left as visible gaps.

07

Primer Where It Matters

Stain-blocking primer over water marks & smoke. Bonding primer over glossy or chalky surfaces. Tinted primer when going from dark to light.

08

Edges Hand-Cut

Ceiling lines, baseboard lines, casing lines — cut by brush, by hand, with the right brush angle for each surface.

09

Two Coats Standard

One coat is for samples. Every wall gets two full coats unless you specifically request otherwise.

10

Daylight Inspection

Walls inspected under natural light at the end of each day — touch-ups happen before we leave.

11

Hardware Reinstalled

Everything that came off goes back on — properly, level, with the right hardware.

12

Final Walk & Touch-Up Kit

Joint walkthrough at completion. You receive labeled touch-up jars for every color we used.

Why Paint Fails

Six reasons paint doesn't last — and how we prevent each.

When you hire us, you're not paying for the paint — you're paying for the prevention. Here's what we're actually working against.

Failure Mode · 01

Adhesion failure

Cause: Painting over glossy, chalky, or oily surfaces without prep. Prevention: Scuff-sand glossy trim; degrease kitchen walls with TSP; bonding primer where adhesion is suspect.

Failure Mode · 02

Cracking at seams

Cause: Skipping caulk on trim/wall transitions, or using cheap caulk that hardens and splits. Prevention: Premium elastomeric paintable caulk on every interior seam, exterior siding gaps tooled flush.

Failure Mode · 03

UV fade (exteriors)

Cause: Standard interior-grade paint outside, wrong sheen for the surface, or cheap pigments. Prevention: UV-stable exterior paint with manufacturer-certified primer system; satin sheen on body, semi-gloss on trim.

Failure Mode · 04

Peeling at trim & doors

Cause: Painting over glossy oil-based with new water-based topcoat. Prevention: We test for oil paint, scuff aggressively, and use a bonding primer designed for the transition.

Failure Mode · 05

Visible roller marks

Cause: Cheap roller covers, wrong nap length for the wall texture, or rolling out too dry. Prevention: Premium microfiber covers, correct nap (3/8" for smooth, 1/2"–3/4" for textured), keeping a wet edge.

Failure Mode · 06

Stains bleeding through

Cause: Painting over water marks, smoke damage, or marker without a stain-blocking primer. Prevention: Shellac- or oil-based stain blocker over any compromised surface before any topcoat.

Frequently Asked

Painting in Colorado Springs, answered.

How long does an interior repaint take?

Single rooms typically finish in a day. Whole-home interiors run 4–7 working days depending on square footage, color count, and trim detail. We'll give you a precise schedule before we start.

What's the best time of year to paint exteriors in Colorado Springs?

Mid-May through early October is the sweet spot. We need consistent overnight temperatures above 50°F for proper paint cure. We schedule exteriors first thing in the season — book early to lock in your slot.

Do you handle HOA color approvals?

Yes — included with every exterior repaint in an HOA neighborhood. We prepare the submission, attach the swatches, and follow up until you have written approval in hand.

What paint brands do you use?

Sherwin-Williams Emerald and Benjamin Moore Aura/Regal are our defaults — premium, low-VOC, durable. We can also work with whatever brand you prefer; we'll just give you our honest opinion on it.

Do you guarantee your work?

Yes. Interior work carries a 2-year workmanship warranty. Exterior repaints carry a 5-year warranty against peeling and adhesion failure. Plus our 100% satisfaction guarantee on every project.

Do I need to move out during a whole-home repaint?

No. We work room-by-room or wing-by-wing so your home stays livable. Furniture is moved to the center and covered, floors are protected, and we clean up at the end of each day.
